Harry Potter is made of chocolate!

Went to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) with $little yesterday. It was a mistake for me because there's a lot more going on between Snape and Dumbledore than was in the movie and I want to know. Of course that means that I need to actually read the books. However, I don't want to buy them as I'll never read them again and the library and I are on the outs for a while. (I can't afford my fines to replace a book I can't find.) I'll have to check and see if HPB has a set on the cheap.

really? the last time i lost a ($500+) book from spl the fine was only $20.

The lost book isn't much. The late fees aren't much. Together they all add up. Since it has to come out of my "fun" budget and not the general fun it will be a week or two more before I can go pay them off.

The books are from Harry's point of view, so you don't learn much about what's going on between Snape and Dumbledore until Harry does.

But do we learn it eventually?

Thanks.

in book 7, yes ;)

[identity profile] hollyking.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured that was the case or there would be something in HBP which would make me want to read it all.

My plan is to just read the whole series. It's not like I'll be stuck waiting for the next book to be released. :)

You'll never read them again? Really? Hubby and I have both read several of them more than once :) I definitely recommend the audio recordings. They make your commute happier :)

Nope, don't care enough to re-read most books.

Audio recordings are what killed my "reading" in the past. I was listening to... The one with the pen that cut your hand while writing and yelling at Harry on the CD. I said if I was still yelling at the end of the next CD I would put it away. I was, so I did. Never finished that book or read any of the rest of it.

The fifth book was my least favorite in the series. I read the Half Blood Prince after listening to the Order of the Phoenix because I found the scenes with Umbridge so exhausting.

I don't enjoy listening to books. I do listen to them on long trips while driving or flying.

Those were the parts that had me stopping.

if you promise to return them, i have the entire set. i don't live far away now, either.

[identity profile] hollyking.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I will return them or replace them if something out of my control happens. (Theft, fire, pixies...)

[identity profile] agentdanak.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
if there's pixies, you better bring me one in a jar.

when would you like to get books?

[identity profile] hollyking.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
If I can catch any of them. Those damn thigns are quick.

Not before Wednesday. I need to finish the books I'm reading now. I'm close to the end of all of them.

no problem. just before friday or after the weekend, if you please.

You have to keep in mind that the books were aimed at kids, are about kids, and are written from their perspective. Yes, they do dumb things at times because at that age they don't have a lot of experience to know better and those that are more outgoing also tend to do stupid things at times. It may be frustrating to read at times but I think they are more authentic that way...

I read one person's review of this current movie (which I will see soon but have had other expenses to deal with for now) where they were complaining about why the kids in the movie didn't talk to each other. My response was - ummm duh - teenagers!

That was explained to me and that view it makes sense to me. One of the reasons I'm willing to try again. Also, if I am fully willing to put them down and come back later.

I know several adults who have the same problems. None of us enlightened ones of course... ;)

I know several adults who have the same problems.

Ain't that the truth! :)

You're welcome to borrow one of our sets. We've got a complete set of the dead-tree US edition, and nearly complete sets of the UK editions in audio and dead-tree (waiting on book 7 for both until the exchange rate is a bit more reasonable).

Thanks. [livejournal.com profile] agentdanak is going to lend me a set.
