I just received a call from the Center for Wooden Boats. It seems I'm the only person who registered for the basic knots seminar this Saturday. So they cancelled it and asked me if I wanted a refund or if I would rather move my registration to the next class on the 18th of August.

Dang.

Heck, find out the list of knots. I can teach you. BTW, I do ACW Navy reinacting in my spare time.

The first class was supposed to teach the Bowline, Clove-Hitch, Reef-Knot, and Sheeps Bend. The first one I'm pretty sure I could try from my days as a Boy Scout. The others I probably have tied once or twice.

We might have to sit down for a chat about that. That's a bit later than my normal time period so I don't know much about the era. Well other than the state of my birth tried to play on both sides. I've been to Union and Confederate historical sites around Missouri.

I bet you could tie a clove hitch too, you just forgot that was the name of the knot.

I never was any good at knots, since they are three dimensional constructs of math and physics they don't reverse for south-paws very well.

At http://www.animatedknots.com/, they allow you to view all the animated .gif files for tying knots in mirror image. That should help with tying them left handed.

You might want to look at the Animated Knots website (http://www.animatedknots.com/). It shows you how to tie about 50 knots, using animated .gifs that you can step through, speed up, slow down, and otherwise manipulate in useful ways.

Interestingly enough, of the knots you listed above, they give specific reasons for rejecting all but the bowline for boating. They show you how to tie them, then tell you not to use them for boating, and why.

I can understand them cancelling the class if there was only one student. It would cost them more to get the instructor there than they would make off of my tuition. I'm very happy they called me ahead of time to tell me and their first offer was to refund my money. I said keep it and roll me into the next class. ;)
