Stuff is getting packed thanks to [livejournal.com profile] hollyqueen and her herculean efforts. Still a bit to do but I think we'll be in shape so I can get everything moved to our new place on Monday. The weather report calls for rain but I don't trust it that far in advance.

Addresses have been updated. Utilities have been shut off. Cable/Internet/Phone installation is scheduled. (Two days with out the intertubes!!!) Moving crew hired. Assistants to help wrangle the moving crew found.

[livejournal.com profile] hollyqueen and I have 9 book cases. Nine, which is four more than we need. They are in good condition, does anyone want one or more of them? They won't be available until next Tuesday but after that I want to get them out of there as fast as possible. Also, we have a lot of books we would like to offer friends before we send them off to charity.

Confirmed the movers today. We'll have a crew transferring the furniture and the majority of our stuff to the new place on the 21st. If I've offered something and you asked when I needed it gone I now have an answer. Before the 21st. First come first served.

I was hoping to have one last movie night in our current place but with all the boxes there's even less room than normal so I don't think that's going to happen. Oh well...

Packing continues. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cheesentoast and K for coming over to help yesterday. A lot of books are in boxes and I made a serious dent in Fibber McGee's closet that is the closet in our office.

Monday December 21st at 9:00am I could use some help with moving. I don't need anyone to lift boxes or carry things. I need an assistant to help wrangle the moving crew I've hired. I'll be busy breaking down things like the bed and desks and could use someone to direct the movers to what boxes and furniture needs to be moved and what needs to stay.

You'll get a morning of my sparkling company, amusement at my crap, first view of our new home and lunch and drinks on me.

Anyone?

Moving Day

Nov. 28th, 2009 04:04 pm
hollyking: (us)

I haven't wanted to post much about the new place until we knew for sure. [livejournal.com profile] hollyqueen and I signed the lease paperwork and have the key. Our new address is effective December 1st but we won't be moving most of our stuff until the 19th. Guess we won't have time to put up a tree this year.

We aren't moving far. Our new digs are in Madrona. We're renting a newly renovated basement and the other person living above us is the landlord and homeowner. So she is going to take care of the place and not be destructive. Also, I love the fact that she's a lawyer who works with youth. Did I mention she has blue/green hair?

Oh, it's 1/3rd of a mile from some cafes and Verite Coffee. Less than that to King Creole BBQ. Can't walk to the grocery store, but I'm ok with that.

hollyking: (windmill)

[livejournal.com profile] hollyqueen and I met with the owner of the condo we're renting. I wanted to dislike her because of the hassle of moving, but after meeting her she is a nice lady and I understand why she's selling it. They're slapping a $40K assessment on each unit to pay for improvements to the outside. That means the owner would be paying about $1100 in fees each month. That's almost what we pay in rent each month so she's losing money each month by renting to us. I still hate moving but I would sell in that position too.

The good news is that due to Seattle regulations the earliest we would have to move is August 31st and that's if she had a buyer lined up and ready to close tomorrow. So we know we have until the end of August and the owner agreed to give us 45 days from the sale to move. Also, the new owner might be looking for an investment property and would love to have solid renters in place and willing to stay.

So between now and August 31st I'm going to go through my stuff again and cull it out. That way I've got time and not making choices under last minute pressure.

Anyone want a love seat? How about an exercise bike? Free if you come take them away.

As [livejournal.com profile] hollyqueen are unpacking we have many boxes of various sizes that we don't need. Does anyone out there need boxes for moving or storage? Most of them are new and were only used for the move. Free for the taking. Depending on where they're going I'm willing to schlep them over.

hollyking: (us)

Everything is out of the old place. We have given them back the keys. The move is done.

Thank you to everyone who helped us with packing, moving and cleaning. It means a lot to both of us!

And now... A nap!

hollyking: (ahead full)

What's done is done. What's not done isn't done. I'm shutting down the computer. In the morning I'm going to rent a truck at zero-dark-thirty. Internet access will not return until Thursday at the earliest. If you need me your only option is calling my mobile phone.

Wish me luck.

I drove west to work for the last time this morning. Tomorrow we move after that going to work I’ll be heading east. No more short trips on 520. Instead we’ll be crushed in with everyone else crossing Lake Washington.

Ready or not tomorrow’s the day.

hollyking: (ahead full)

The Ups: Stuff is going out to charity tonight and tomorrow. Just the living room, kitchen and bathrooms to pack.

The Downs: One more day driving with the sun at my back. Moving to Seattle removes the ability to place holds at King County Libraries. Lack of vacation time means I only get one day for the actual move.

hollyking: (cold miser)

Today [livejournal.com profile] hollyqueen and I went to our new home and filled out the walkthrough paperwork to mark all the existing damage. The more time I spend there the more I like it. While we were there we also measured each room and sketched the layout so we can figure out how to arrange the furniture. Finally before we left we christened our new home with some naked frolic on the living room floor. MMmm...

Next up was lunch so we walked up the street to Philadelphia Fevre for some cheesesteak sandwiches. Those were good! I love having a few places to grab a bite within walking distance. On the way back to the car we stopped to look at the menu for Crush. I found a lot of things to try but poor [livejournal.com profile] hollyqueen only found one. The thing I think is the most interesting is the Chef's Grand Tasting Menu, which seems to be a group of selections made by the chef. At $105 I'll have to save up but I so want that adventure.

Back to Redmond to deal with the office. We still have things to pack but all the trash is out of here ready to go to the dumpster. Our big goal for tomorrow is taking everything useful that we're not keeping and donating it to Goodwill. Then in the evening I'll pack up the rest of the stuff in here and start making a dent in my clothes.

3 more days... Will we get done in time? I hope so because I sure don't want to shuttle everything over in the car. That would take for ever.

Next Wednesday [livejournal.com profile] hollyqueen and I will be city kids again! There's a bit of packing left but the biggest issue right now is how to get the things we aren't keeping out of the house. Is anyone available on Sunday to help cart things to Goodwill?

hollyking: (ahead full)

Saturday we were supposed to sign the paperwork and get the keys to our new apartment. It didn’t happen because the crew that was supposed to clean and paint didn’t, but I did get to see the apartment for myself. I like it. I like it a lot. [livejournal.com profile] hollyqueen has excellent taste! (She married me, didn’t she?)

The new plan is to go on Friday during lunch to sign the paperwork, walk through the place and note the problems and get the keys. There are several small things that need to be fixed. Things like a broken faceplate on an outlet and a sliding closet door that’s out of it’s track. The manager also agreed to swap the hinges on the refrigerator door. Some genius left them on the left so you can’t stand in front of the fridge while you open the door.

I’ll take some pictures and post them on Friday. I didn’t want to capture the orange wall and thank goodness I never saw the huge nose on the wall. There is a usable deck and I have permission to use a gas grill. We have a reserved parking space in the underground garage. The dining room has a garden window, so I’m going to try my hand and growing some herbs.

There are a lot of stores and services that are only a short walk away. Places like Philadelphia Fevre and Island Video. The Broadway Sunday Farmers Market is about a mile away. The City People’s Garden Store is less than a mile away.

The more I think about this place the more I like it. I’m still not fond of the process of moving but that’s a detail I’m willing to handle to live in a good place.

hollyking: (ahead full)

The move is progressing well. I think I’m finally starting to realize that life is different in Seattle. For one we’re going to lose our nice short commute and have to deal with crossing Lake Washington. I did a bit of quick math and it looks like taking the bus is much cheaper than driving. It’s about $15/day to drive and only about $9/day to take the bus. According to Google Maps the drive should take about 34 minutes and the bus ride would take about 55 minutes. Sounds like the bus is a winner as I’ll get much more time to read.

I just got done switching our electric service to the new apartment. Instead of transferring my account with Puget Sound Energy I had to close our account and open a new one with Seattle City Light. I wish I had found the online form before I went through the long phone process but the service is done and that’s one less thing on our list.

I’m really excited about living in a city again. I am looking forward to exploring Seattle.

hollyking: (major victory)

Thanks so much to [livejournal.com profile] loree, [livejournal.com profile] loba and [livejournal.com profile] shannonluna! Me love you long time! They came over last night and helped us pack. I think we made a significant dent in the packing. The big thing left is for us to go through our closets and the office to separate out the stuff to keep from the stuff that’s going to be given away/donated to charity.

Speaking of things that are going away. This weekend we’ll be around and we have lots of books that are free for the taking. So if you’re around give us a call and we’ll work out a time for you come find a treasure. ;)

Moving day is two weeks from today. I can’t wait until its over.

hollyking: (ahead full)

Folks are coming over to help pack tomorrow night. I just reserved a truck from U-Haul and hired a moving crew. Smokes! We're actually moving.

hollyking: (Default)

Just a couple of notes. No packing will be done until at least the 1st of June. [livejournal.com profile] hollyqueen and I are booked until then. We will be busy all weekend with guests and looking for a new apartment.

I was thinking of one to two hour packing sessions followed by some relaxation. Except on the weekend where we have longer and can break for food inbetween packing.

We only have 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living room and the kitchen. With enough help it shouldn't take that long to get it all done. There is a lot in the house that will not be packed and folks are free to take any of it that they would enjoy. We don't mind children helping out or even being present if they're too young to pack.

We live in downtown Redmond and the there are several busses that stop right by the entrance to our complex. Look for routes that take you to the intersection of Willows Rd and Redmond Way.

I have a list so you don't need to reply again unless you have more questions. I will be setting up polls so you can mark which days you're available. More help is always welcome.

hollyking: (us)

[livejournal.com profile] hollyqueen and I need help. We are moving and need some help packing everything into boxes. Can anyone come give us a hand?

I will provide boxes, all packing material, food and drink. The plan is to have several packing parties to work around schedules and to make up for the fact that we don't have enough room to have everyone over at once. This won't involve heavy lifting as I'll be hiring a crew to move everything to the new place.

If you can help please reply with what evenings you would be willing to come over. I'll get back to you with which nights we could use your help.

ETA: If you would like to help and you have limited transportation I will give, or arrange, a ride to our apartment and back to your desired destination.

hollyking: (the good life)
I just read an article about trial ferry service between Kirkland and UW starting in 2009. I would love that, except that I don't plan on being in a place to use it in 2009. We are moving next May and I hope to move into the city as I've had enough of suburban life.
