Saturday I filled another hole in my film history education. I watched the Fritz Lang film Metropolis (1927) with [livejournal.com profile] hollyqueen and [livejournal.com profile] cheesentoast. I found it very interesting to see early examples of mad scientists, their plans and labs.

So now there’s one less film on the AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Movies list. I need to create a web page to track my progress with this list.

Also, I have to create a character named Rotwang now. It just has to be done.

Metropolis is my favorite movie of all time, even better than Rocky Horror Picture Show. I love to watch it with people who have never seen it before and watch them realize just how many of the movie's imagery has become cultural shorthand for us. You can see reflections of it in just about every science fiction movie made since then.

One of the ways I decide to invest in a video format is if I can buy a copy of Metropolis in it.

Too bad so much of the film has been lost. The restoration on the DVD we watched was good but I would have loved to see scenes that were described in the titles.

Oooh, lovely! [livejournal.com profile] gfish and I got to see it at Gaswork Park once. This special free showing on a huge screen set up against the gasworks, with live orchestration composed and performed by some Seattle student symphony. It was awesome.

I love Metropolis.

The twitchy eye means "evil."
