I'm a beer drinker but I know many of my friends like the harder stuff like Whiskey. (I'm looking at you [livejournal.com profile] phyrebright.) I just read a post on the RealBeer.com blog. Rogue Ales has released "Dead Guy Whiskey." So now you can support a local company and drink your whiskey too. :)

There are several folks in the area who have taken the micro-brew mentality into the realm of distilled spirits. We have several really good gins being made in the state, and I know of one micro-distiller who will be bringing a true absinthe to the market later this year.

As for whiskey, I prefer mine to measure its age in years, not months.

I have seen this trend here in FlyOver U.S.A. as well. There are a couple of guys over in Kansas that are doing the micro distillary thing. One is turning out really great stuff, his Fox Vodka is as smooth as a sip of spring water.

The other is not in the same league. I tried some light brown lighter fluids that he was trying to pass off as whiskey. As I am trying to remember the proper first aid for the ingestion of petroleum products, he started going on about how if you used crushed charcoal you can get that same quality in months that would take years in the traditional method. Uh, I don't think so, there is more than an exchange of chemicals needed to convert moonshine into whiskey.

The blessing and the curse of small batch shops. I think the crushed charcoal guy was thinking of quantity not quality. ;)
