hollyking: (science bad)

The other day a co-worker and I were talking before a meeting and the topic of slide rules came up. I mentioned that I didn't have a slide rule which seemed a shame. This morning I found one on my desk with the following note:

All of us geeks need at least one. I definitely don't need 5! Now you have one.

Rock on! Now to learn how to use it!

I have two of my g-pa's slide rules, one circular and one linear. I can't figure out how they work at all. But I don't feel bad--neither could he. I understand that alone was the reason he sold paper instead of practicing engineering.

I'm hoping I have the Knack and just need a bit of explanation to figure it out. Kind of like a puzzle...

You probably actually need two... a 'slip-stick' and a circular slide rule :-)

One at a time, but I'll keep an eye out for a circular one. :)

Having a slip-stick is geeky, trying to learn to actually use the damn thing is a sign of latent masochistic tenancies.

I'm not so sure they're latent...
