I shouldn't watch Food Network Challenge particularly the sugar sculpture episodes like Sugar Impossible. I've been tempted by the thought of making sculptures out of sugar before but this episode had a sci-fi theme and a couple of the sculptures incorporated gears that were made out of sugar.

Hmmm, I says to myself, I bet you could cast gears in sugar and get them to drive something. Well, I replied, for a fraction of a second until the sugar shatters. See sugar is very fragile as it doesn't bend or flex. I have that bit of knowledge reinforced in every episode as I watch the pieces break and shatter when they hit the floor.

Just another thing I want to learn more about... :)

Ha, that was the exact thought I had watching that episode. I bet you could get it working with some kind of reinforced chocolate, find some edible fiberglass substitute. Wouldn't work very well, or for very long. But just imagine a chocolate clock ticking away!

It only has to work long enough to make it to the "judging table."

I am imagining it. I was thinking of the laser cut gears you had made. No reason the laser cutter couldn't make a mold instead.

Step one is to be able to cast sugar and assemble some simple structures.

Cast your sugar with egg white. It will be VERY durable and last a VERY long time. IIRC it withstood both rain and snow and finally required long soaking in large amounts of hot water and a sledge hammer to lay waste to the castle. Scary sturdy.

Thanks for the tip! I'll look into it.
