Phone Tag!

Last week I spend a lot of time playing phone tag with our contact at the Washington County DHS. Understandably, she's a very busy woman and I kept forgetting my mobile phone at my desk so I missed her calls. We finally made contact this morning when she called. She sounded very excited when I told her that we were looking at adopting older children and were willing to adopt a set of siblings. It seems strange to me to have the love and care to adopt a child, but then break them up from what little family they have left. I guess I'm big on the thought that they might be cheaper by the dozen. ;)

Miss Vandijk is sending us an adoption interest packet. It contains information about the process of adoption and the classes that we have to take. They don't include the actual application or paperwork because those are handed out as part of the classes. Instead of waiting for the packet I went ahead and registered [livejournal.com profile] hollyqueen and I for the next available set. So if anyone plans anything on Saturday mornings during April or May we're going to have to bow out. Because the classes start at 9am that cuts into a lot of late Friday night plans as well, but that's a change I'm willing to make.

I wished the classes started sooner, but considering all the other things we have to do it's probably a good thing. I still need to go through a mountain of junk and weed out what I want to keep from the trash. We need to find a bigger apartment, because a 2 bedroom unit will not be enough. My filing system has been to toss things into a box and sift through it when I need to find anything. As you can guess this isn't a good solution and I need to sift through all of that too. Time to get busy.

Probably. Depends on what I unearth in the pile.

"I guess I'm big on the thought that they might be cheaper by the dozen."

I always thought that they might be cheaper if raised by someone else.

"Because the classes start at 9am that cuts into a lot of late Friday night plans as well"

I see the class itself is teaching you the experience of being a parent too!

Joking aside, when you figure out who you're adopting you need to open a baby registry somewhere with the stuff you need so we can pitch in. I commend you in this most nobel of efforts. I've heard arguments that not having children is selfish. I've heard arguments that having children is selfish. The truth is that either one is selfish, just in different ways. The only true non-selfish path is the one you are taking now.

And I love the required classes. Do they require a knocked-up 13 year old to take anything? Noooooooooo. But look out everyone! A couple of married, working adults are interested in helping some very unfortunate children.. how can we punish them???

That's a good idea. We'll have to set one up at Amazon and a couple of other places when the time comes.

Not only are there the classed we'll have many interviews and inspections to pass before we can adopt too. I can see the reasons for taking the time and being cautious but when I read about the crap that happens to kids from their own parents I think there should be tests and inspections there too.

"According to our records, Sara will be 3 years old tomorrow. It is time for your annual inspection."

Makes sense to me, but you know people would absolutely freak.
