Damn!

First, I talked to Mom last night. She was doing well. They didn't find anything but she'll be going back for more testing next week.

Second, [livejournal.com profile] ragnorokt's gift arrived. Fruit cake at last! I know a lot of people have a negative opinion of fruit cake but that's because they've only been exposed to the brick full of garbage that's sold in stores. A well made fruit cake is a thing of joy and wonder.

Finally, my PowerBook crashed and now the recovery tools on the install DVD will not detect the hard drive. I lost everything. Music, movies, photos, documents, coding projects... "But [livejournal.com profile] hollyking, you're tech savvy. You know you should back everything up." I was! It crashed in the middle of a back up. GAH!

My hope is that I've just toasted the drive so I can get a replacement and get it up and running cheaply. Does anyone in the Seattle area have TORX screwdrivers? In particular the T8 and T9 size? This comes at a bad time because I don't have any spare cash to pay for tools or a new drive and I was backing up the system in preparation of selling it.

My music!

Tornassuk!

Following the tradition of naming my system after bears I've named my new PowerBook Tornassuk. According to the Polar Bears International fact page folks in eastern Greenland call polar bears Tornassuk.

I recived two calls this morning about jobs. Both are for 6 months or so. The problem is that one is in Bellvue Washington and the other one is on the east coast. They both sound interesting and it looks like I'll make some nice bank if I take the east coast gig. I just don't know if I want to be away from [livejournal.com profile] hollyqueen and my friends that long. At least I'll be able to come home each weekend if I take the Bellvue job. I put in my resume for both of them. Let's see what happens.

PS: Damn LJ and their default of auto formatting!

Last night I received the Apple Developer Kit. It is a nice white box with a letter, a DVD with Max OS 10.4 and the Xcode 2 SDK, another DVD with what should be a lot of samples and documentation, a CD with a monthly update of documentation and a T-shirt which doesn't fit. Too bad the CDs aren't readable by Windows XP so I couldn't even browse the documentation last night.

This morning I receive the shipping confirmation for the PowerBook. It's coming from Shanghai and the FedEx tracking page doesn't even try to give me a delivery estimate. I guess the next few days will be a lesson in patience. ;)

I stagger in to work today. I'm a little sad this morning. [livejournal.com profile] cheesentoast is leaving for school today and stopped off to see her for the last time. We've had our ups and downs but she's been a good friend to me and was there to help during a very bad time in my life. I know she's making the right choice, but I'm going to miss her.

When I open my email I'm shocked to see the subject line "Shipping Confirmation" on a message from Apple.com. Woo-Hoo! My shiny new toy has shipped! No, not really. The developer kit has shipped and should be here on Monday. Great, no I get to look at the shiny software that I can't use because the system isn't here yet. Oh, well... At least I can start reading up on developing Mac applications. I still need to come up with a name too.

I've begun the switch. Thanks to an excellent quarter I just ordered a 15" PowerBook G4. Apple's order page says it will ship in 1 to 3 days and will take from 1 to 5 days to arrive. So I can expect my new toy any time between tomorrow and Friday the 19th. Now I need to come up with a name. Any suggestions?

I know I need to pick up SubEthaEdit. What other killer Mac apps should I be sure to get?
